Raku Firing

Raku firing pottery classes

The raku kiln in action!

Occasionally, Earth & Fire potters will schedule a raku firing. This is a lot of fun and can work up quite a sweat!

In Raku, pottery is removed from the kiln at bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials, which blackens raw clay and causes crazing in the glaze surface.

The results are amazing!

It gets hot!

  • The resulting chemical reactions (glazes starved of oxygen by the fire) create iridescent and metallic finishes impossible to get any other way.
